1.7% Increase in Area owned by Foreigners in the First Quarter

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs announced that the foreigner-owned area in Korea as of late March of this year reached 213.86 million square meters, which is worth of 27.723 trillion won.
*It is equivalent to 0.2% of the Korean territory (99,990 ㎢), 35% of Seoul (605㎢) and the size of Jeonju city (206㎢).(units: ㎡) The area owned by foreigners increased by 3.51 million worth of 808.1 billion won compared to the end of last year, which means 1.7% increase in size and 2.8% in property value.
By landowner, overseas Koreans with foreign nationality own 140 million of the area (47.0%), joint corporations own 87 million (37.7%) and foreign corporations own 21.41 million (10.0%).
By nationality, the U.S. accounts for 122.82 million (57.4%) followed by Europe with 32.66 million (15.3%), Japan with 19.07 million (8.9%), and China with 2.67 million (1.3%). Other nations take up 36.64 million (17.1%).
By land use, 117.21 million (54.8%) will be used for after-retirement life and investment, followed by 74.76 million (35.0%) for the construction of factories, 17.5 million (5.0%) for residence and 6.11 million (2.9%) for commerce.
In the first quarter of this year, foreigners acquired 5.32 million and disposed 1.81 million of land, and therefore the total area owned by foreigners increased 3.51 million (1.7%).
By landowner, foreigners own 1.63 million (46.4%) of land, followed by overseas Koreans with foreign nationality with 830 thousand (23.7%) and foreign corporations with 580 thousand (16.5%).
By nationality, the U.S. accounts for 2.20 million (62.7%), Europe, 840 thousand (23.9%), Japan, 90 thousand (2.6%) and lastly China 40 thousand (1.1%). The rest of land, 340 thousand (9.7%) is owned by other nations.
By land use, 2.43 million (69.2%) will be used for after-retirement life and investment, followed by 530 thousand (15.1%) for the construction of factories, 320 thousand (9.1%) for residence and 190 thousand (5.4%) for commerce.
By region, Jeju accounts for 1.1 million (31%) followed by ChungnamProvince with 770 thousand (22%) and JeonnamProvince with 140 thousand (4%). By contrast, in JeonbukProvince, the foreigner-owned area decreased by 140 thousand.
During the first quarter of this year, the total number of land acquisition transaction realized by foreigners is 1431, increased from 1044 of last year’s first quarter.
