International Investment Position at the end of Sep 2009

Bank of Korea announced International Investment Position at the end of September.
As of the end of September 2009, the outstanding amount of Korea's investment abroad stood at 577.7 billion dollars, an increase of 46.5 billion dollars (+8.8%) from the end of June 2009. By investment type, all types of investment increased including direct investment (+3.8 billion dollars), portfolio investment (+14.0 billion dollars), financial derivatives (+1.4 billion dollars), other investment (+4.8 billion dollars) and reserve assets (+22.5 billion dollars). By factor, an increase of 29.3 billion dollars resulted from trade factors and a 17.2 billion dollar increase resulted from non-trade factors.
As of the end of September 2009, the outstanding amount of Korea's external assets in debt instruments stood at 400.5 billion dollars, an increase of 28.3 billion dollars (+7.6%) from the end of June 2009.
As of the end of September 2009, the outstanding amount of foreign investment in Korea stood at 735.4 billion dollars, an increase of 97.8 billion dollars (+15.3%) from the end of June 2009.
As of the end of September 2009, Korea's external debt* stood at 397.5 billion dollars, an increase of 18.9 billion dollars (+5.0%) from the end of June 2009.
As of the end of September 2009, the net international investment position (assets minus liabilities, Net IIP) stood at -157.7 billion dollars, down 51.3 billion dollars from the end of previous quarter.
Meanwhile, net external assets in the form of debt instruments (external assets in debt instruments - external debt) stood at 3.0 billion dollars, the first shift to a positive(+) amount since the end of September 2008 (-23.5 billion dollars).
